Even though, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel believes the title of the movie will hurt tourism and economic development; Spike Lee much anticipated movie “Chiraq” will hit theaters December 4th. The movie will then be made available on Amazon Instant Video.
Chiraq is a nickname given because there are more murders and violence that occur in Chicago than the war in Iraq.
The film focuses on gang violence by men in some of Chicago’s neighborhoods. It is based on the Greek comedy “Lysistrata,” by Aristophanes. It was originally performed in 411 B.C. in Athens—is the tale of Trojans and Spartans warring with each other. In the play the women involved withhold sex from the warriors in an effort to stop the violence.
Teyonah Parris takes on the lead role of Lysistrata, who like in the comedy “Lysistrata” convinces the women in Chi-town to withhold sex from their men until the bloodshed stops. We also see Nick Cannon as Chi-Raq, a gun toting rapper from Chicago.
Samuel L Jackson, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, Jennifer Hudson are featured in the movie as well, just to name a few.
Let’s hope that the movie will have a positive impact on the state!
