Quand c’est Cancer

The song is from his second album “Racine Carrée” “Square root” (2013). In his black and white video he explores the darkness of Cancer while it also showcases Stromae’s dancing skills amidst the life of the theater overrun by spooky visuals of the disease that eventually takes over his body too. The video was directed by Xavier Rayé and choregraphed by Marion Motin who has already collaborated with the artist on previous videos.

Stromae 101

Impressed by the Stromae’s “Alors on dance” record, a then young trainee Vincent Verbelen music manager at NRJ radio station in Brussels decides to air the hit record. The song was number one in several countries in Europe. And that’s how Stromae (Maestro backward) gained international attention. He collaborated with Kanye West on the remix of « Alors on danse. »

Stromae was born to a Rwandan father and a Flemish mother. After failing in the public school system his mother placed him in a Roman Catholic Jesuit school. He, then went on and studied at the film school of Brussels.

Known for his distinctive clothing style; the artist also owns a limited fashion line, called “Mosaert” (an anagram of his stage name). It’s described as “hipster” and “retro kitsch”. Stromae has said that he wanted to “create a bridge between British style and African aesthetic.” No wonder with the bright colors and geometrical patterns!

His influences

Stromae says about his influences “I was in a little group doing rap music. I thought that rather than copying the French sound, I’d focus on a more American style but give it a European spin. And then I rediscovered 90s Eurodance. For a long time we were ashamed of that sound but in fact there’s a lot to discover, it has its roots in everything from house to salsa. I also really admire Jacques Brel – he has been a huge influence on me – but also all sorts of other stuff, Cuban son, and the Congolese rumba, that I heard as a child; that music rocked the whole of Africa.”

Hes actually touring in the US with “Classic Man” Jidenna and the beautiful Janelle Monae as a guest artist.
